Matriculation at the University is a full-circle accomplishment for Lindsay Park ENG’25. As a high school junior in Horsham, Pennsylvania—about an hour north of campus—Lindsay participated in GEARS Day, a free annual event during which Penn undergraduates visit area high schools to educate students about engineering disciplines through hands-on workshops. GEARS Day offered her insight into the diverse pathways and applications of engineering, and it opened her eyes to her own potential. “I was always interested in STEM, but I didn’t feel prepared to study it at the collegiate level. At GEARS Day, the student facilitators made engineering seem so equitable and accessible, and the event gave me the confidence to apply to Penn’s School of Engineering and Applied Science.”
Now a Systems Engineering Major at the University, Lindsay shares her passion for education and service through her participation in Penn’s Society of Women Engineers (SWE), the non-profit organization responsible for GEARS Day and many other community outreach, professional development, and advocacy programs. As SWE President, Lindsay provides essential leadership to her team and facilitates numerous educational initiatives throughout the year—including the event that brought her to Penn in the first place. “GEARS Day was the most impactful event I experienced in high school. As a current Engineering undergraduate and SWE President, it has been so rewarding to be empowered to study engineering, to empower others to get started with STEM, and to connect with members of our alumni network. I am so grateful to have the chance to bridge together this global community of young talent and seasoned professionals.”
Penn has offered Lindsay the occasion to explore multiple passions beyond engineering and community outreach—including travel. She met with policymakers in Geneva, Switzerland as a Perry World House student fellow, and she learned from Aboriginal communities in Darwin, Australia through a Penn Global Seminar. This high level of global engagement is made accessible to all students by philanthropy. “At the heart of these international experiences is the support of alumni who loved their time at Penn and want to ensure an equally rewarding journey for current undergraduates, like me. Every year, I get another once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I’m truly grateful to the donors who make that possible.”
